Your Guide to Cleaning Fly Screens

Fly screens are a great addition to any home. They help to keep those annoying mosquitoes, flies and bugs out of your space and hair. They also provide a welcome extra layer of home security to protect your family and possessions.

Unfortunately, fly screens are also going to build up with dust, grime and bugs – it’s just a part of their jobs. Luckily, it’s easy enough to get your fly screens looking brand new. Read on to find out more about how to clean insect screens.

For Removable Screens

If your security doors and screens are made to be removable, start by taking them off. Set them up outdoors well away from your property. Try propping them against a vertical surface such as your fence or garage wall. If not, just lay them down on the ground.

After this, all you have to do is get out the garden hose and give them a good rinse. The pressure will help to remove any stubborn dirt and grime, but be careful. Too much pressure and you run the risk of stretching your fly screen or even pulling the edges out of their fittings.

After this, get a bucket and fill it with some warm water and a gentle detergent. Everyday dish powder or fluid should work fine here. Get a soft, bristly brush and get to work on one side. When that side is clean, turn the screen around and do the same for the other side. Give it a good rinse with the hose and let it dry, before re-attaching it to the door or window.

Cleaning Fixed Security Doors and Screens

Fixed security mesh is an asset to your home. It can’t be removed, meaning it’s another barrier that prevents invaders from entering your home. Luckily, you can still clean these screens and doors – just make sure that you don’t get too much water on your windowsills, door frame or floor.

Start by placing some towel or paper towel on the floor and windowsills inside your home. After this, head to the outside of your home and rinse your security mesh using a bucket and some warm water. Try not to use your hose. Then repeat the rinsing inside if you can.

You could also use a portable air compressor to clean your screens. This works by using strong currents of compressed air to blow away any residual dirt and debris.

Another way is to use your vacuum. Just fix the brush attachment and give your screens a once over cleaning.

Consider Hiring a Professional

Are you too time-poor to give your fly screens the love they deserve? Or does the thought of all that grime make your stomach churn? You could always consider hiring a professional cleaner. They can take care of these types of jobs, leaving you free to spend your time on other, more pleasant activities.
